How to calculate a mess meal rate (with a worked example)

Almost every argument in a shared mess comes down to one number: the meal rate. Someone thinks it’s too high, someone else is sure they ate fewer meals. The rule itself is simple — the trouble is that the steps get muddled.

The formula

A meal rate is just the average cost of producing one meal.

Meal rate = total bazar cost ÷ total number of meals

Two words in that sentence do a lot of work:

• Total bazar cost — food shopping only. Rent, wifi, gas and the cook’s wages do not belong here.
• Total number of meals — every meal eaten by every member across the whole month, added together.

A worked example

Say your mess has five members, and at the end of the month the numbers look like this:

The meal rate is:

18,000 ÷ 450 = ৳40 per meal

If Rahim ate 102 meals that month, his meal cost is:

102 × 40 = ৳4,080

Split the other costs separately

Rent, electricity and wifi don’t depend on how much anyone ate, so they’re split equally per head:

Other costs ৳7,500 ÷ 5 members = ৳1,500 each

Rahim’s total for the month is 4,080 + 1,500 = ৳5,580. If he deposited ৳6,000 during the month, he gets ৳420 back.

Four mistakes that break the maths

1. Mixing other costs into the bazar total. This inflates the meal rate and quietly penalises whoever ate the least.
2. Missing meal entries. Skip a day and the meal count drops, which pushes the rate up for everyone.
3. Not separating guest meals. A guest’s meals should be added to the member who invited them.
4. Charging a mid-month joiner a full month of shared costs. Pro-rate it for the days they were actually there.
